The Data Masker Software
The Data Masker application is used to construct and run the collection of rules
(called an Masking Set) which replace sensitive information in test databases
with realistic looking, but secure, false information. If you are unsure about
what a Masking Set is, and why you might need one, please see the useful
Masking Set Overview page.

The Data Masker Application
The Data Masker presents its global functions (loading, saving, exiting etc.) as a
column of buttons in the right hand side of the application window. The tabs
on the top left are used to
provide areas of major functionality where the current Masking Set
can be built or modified. Along the
bottom of the window are three status line areas where Data Masker
provides information about its current state.
The Global Functions
- The Mask Logo Button
- The Mask Logo button brings up an "About" dialog box which provides information on the Data Masker version
and support contact information.
- New Set Wizard
- The New Set Wizard button greatly simplifies the creation of a new Masking
Set. The Wizard will present a series of screens - and explain each step in turn. Use this tool whenever you need to create a new Masking Set.
- Load Set from File
- The Load Set from File button reads in a Masking Set and configures the Data Masker to use it. Once the
set is loaded it can be modified and re-saved.
- Save Set
- Saves the set to a disk file. The saved Masking Set file is a standard user readable text file. It is
inadvisable to manually modify a Masking Set file. Please see the warnings in the Masking
Set Overview before editing it.
- Save Set As
- Saves the set to a disk file with a new name.
- Clear Set
- The Clear Set button clears the existing Masking Set information from
the Data Masker application. If there are
unsaved changes to the currently loaded Masking Set the option of
discarding or saving the changes will be offered.
The Tabs
- Set Schemas
- The Set Schemas Tab displays the names of the target Oracle schemas. Take care
to correctly set the schema connection information on this tab because these are the
schemas the Masking Rules will connect with in order to modify the data.
Never execute
Data Masker rules against a production environment. Please see the
specific Set Schemas Tab page for
detailed information on this topic.
- Set Tables
- The Data Masker will, as part of its operation, acquire the definitions
and structure of all tables in
the target Oracle schemas defined in the Set Schemas Tab. This tab provides a ready
reference to the tables in each schema. Please see the specific
Set Tables Tab page for detailed
information on this topic.
- Set Rules
- This is an extremely important Tab which supports the creation, editing and
dropping of rules
for the Masking Set. After the New Set Wizard has been run to build the
basic structure of the Masking Set, most of the remaining work constructing the
Masking Rules is performed using the
tools on this Tab. Please see the specific
Rules Tab page for detailed information on this topic.
- Run the Masking Set tab
- This tab provides the tools to execute the masking of the data in the target
schemas (according to the defined rules). Also available on this tab are mechanisms
to monitor the progress of the Masking Set run. Please see the specific
Run the Masking Set tab help page for detailed
information on this topic.
- Misc. Setup
- This tab provides a variety of tools and configuration options. Please see the specific
Misc. Setup Tab help page for detailed information on this topic.
