Data Masker
Step-By-Step Get Started Guide

If you have just installed the Data Masker software you will want to see how it works and begin to use it. To assist you with your evaluation and ease you gently along the learning curve we suggest you take the following actions - in the order given below.

Note: If you are waiting for an evaluation key you have requested, you can still view the tutorials and create the sample schema (see the steps below). We apologize for any delay - the evaluation key should be with you shortly.

  1. View the "Getting Started with the Data Masker" tutorial. (view from web (java version)) (view from web (flash version))
This tutorial provides a quick introduction to the Data Masker software. After you have finished viewing it, you will have a pretty good idea of how the Data Masker operates.

  2. Create the sample schema.
The DDL to create the sample schema is installed with the Data Masker software under the DataMasker Sample Schema directory. Read the readme.txt file in this directory and create the sample schema on a test Oracle database somewhere. Hint: if the schema's name is DM_TEST (password DM_TEST) and the TNS Name is set to TESTDB1 then you will not have to edit the connection information in the sample schema.

  3. Load and run the sample2 Masking Set.
The sample2 Masking Set will connect to the sample schema and mask the data in three of the columns in the DM_CUSTOMER table in the sample schema. Be sure to have a look at the data in the DM_CUSTOMER table before and after you run the Masking Set so that you can see the data changes.

  4. View the "Creating a New Masking Set" tutorial. (view from web (java version)) (view from web (flash version))
This tutorial demonstrates how to use the New Masking Set Wizard to create the framework of a Masking Set. Once you have seen this tutorial you will know how to generate the basic structure of a Masking Set for your own schemas.

  5. Run the Data Masker New Set Wizard on the sample schema.
The tutorial in the previous step will show you how this is done. At the end of the process you will have built the basic structure of a Masking Set. This Masking Set will have no rules and will be identical to the sample1 Masking Set which is installed with the Data Masker software.

  6. View the "Creating and Executing Masking Rules" tutorial. (view from web (java version)) (view from web (flash version))
This tutorial illustrates the creation of a Masking Rule and then executes that rule against a table in the Data Masker sample schema. After viewing this tutorial, you should be able to create and run your own Masking Rules.

  7. Experiment with Masking Rules in the sample schema.
Add your own rules to the newly built Masking Set (or just load the sample1 set) and observe the before and after effect on the information in the sample schema tables.

  8. Build Masking Sets and Rules for your own schemas.
At this point you should have a pretty good idea how to begin building and executing Masking Sets for your own test schemas. Remember, never use the Data Masker software against a production database. There is no way to undo the data changes made by the Data Masker software.
